The problem was reported by Kaspersky Lab, whose specialists discovered a vulnerability in Telegram for Windows that allows users to send malicious applications under the guise of various attachments, such as images.
"The attack was carried out according to the classical scheme of right-to-left override (RLO) when sending files to the interlocutor. A special unprinted symbol U + 202E (Unicode) was used, which mirrored the order of the characters following it. Typically, hackers use this symbol, misleading the victim when displaying the name and extension of the executable, "- says the official channel Telegram.
Captured computers were used by scammers for mining crypto currency and other unpleasant things. For example, hackers pumped all the local Telegram caches from the victims. According to Kaspersky Lab, for all the time, more than a thousand computers have been damaged, which are hidden by Monero, Zcash and Fantomcoin.
According to the information received from Kaspersky Lab, its specialists studied only the version of the messenger for Windows, so it is possible that other versions of the popular program were used by intruders. The development team reported that the problem had already been eliminated, and the head of Telegram noted that reports of antivirus companies should be accepted with a degree of skepticism, as they tend to exaggerate the seriousness of their findings for getting publicity in the media. In an official statement Telegram also said that no one can remotely control a computer if the user himself has not launched a pre-malware program.
