Head of Apple's Research Laboratory told about the work on the autopilot

The fact that Apple is working on its own version of the autopilot, everyone said a long time, but the corporation politely kept silent, without revealing any details about the project. Apparently, while there was simply nothing to talk about. Now Ruslan Salakhutdinov, the head of the department of research of the AI of Apple, made a with a report, which described the principles of the future autopilot and told about the work done. Many of his words are already familiar to the projects of other companies, but there were also really interesting innovations.

For example, Apple has created a unique object recognition system that does an excellent job even in difficult situations. Even if the camera lens is covered with rain drops, which makes it much more difficult for the program to view and recognize objects, the system still accurately calculates the distance to objects and accurately determines the location of the pedestrian. Including if the person crossing the road is half hidden from the cameras by another car.

The car positioning system is also interesting. It works by localizing the location of the machine on the terrain, while simultaneously creating a detailed three-dimensional map of the environment using the sensors of the car. This approach allows the autopilot system to make clear decisions in difficult situations, when it is required to act quickly if, for example, an incautious pedestrian has jumped on the road.

At the moment, Apple's main goal is the production of self-managed shuttles for its own staff - they will help employees and guests move faster on the giant Apple campus and its environs. Own cars are not yet produced by Apple, so it is unclear whether the shuttles will become the only application or whether the autopilot will be used in other developments of the future.
