The central bank of Uruguay issued a statement according to which a pilot project for the introduction of digital currency has already been launched, and the digital analogue of the peso will be regulated by analogy with conventional currency, but will have technological support.
In the next six months since the launch of the digital Uruguayan peso, the Central Bank of the country will monitor its formation and influence on various processes. It is reported that the new currency is not planned to be tested yet at the state level, therefore the first ten thousand customers of the local mobile operator ANTEL will be able to test the Uruguayan peso - they are already offered to download the application from the site, after which they can set up a digital wallet and make their first payment through the national payment system Red Pagos.
For the test period, an e-peso limit equal to one thousand dollars is established for individuals and five thousand for legal entities.
According to representatives of the Bank and the Government of Uruguay, the introduction of the digital peso will save money on printing ordinary money and make transactions with the state currency more transparent. The cost of producing cash is quite high and often together with development and printing is up to ten percent of the denomination of the banknote.
