The tests of the world's first unmanned freight train

The Australian-British concern Rio Tinto is the third largest transnational mining and metallurgical company in the world, operating in many countries of the world. To continue to maintain high performance and keep pace with the times, the company's specialists constantly test new technologies and actively introduce them in production. One of the innovations was an unmanned freight train, which was recently tested in the Pilbara region of Australia.

The AutoHaul project, in which several unmanned cargo trains were created, was repeatedly postponed due to problems with the autopilot software and other unforeseen circumstances, but now the developers are going to launch unmanned trains as early as 2018. In the meantime, the trains on autopilot went with the help of engine-inspectors, the convoys themselves were controlled remotely and thus went about a hundred kilometers. Independently they managed to drive only about a kilometer, but this achievement showed that the autopilot can work stably and can cope with the task.

Trains capable of delivering cargoes on their own promise to save the company a lot of money, because if there are no people on board, then there is no need to stop, rest and eat, so it's much faster to arrive at the destination of an unmanned train. If everything goes well, Rio Tinto plans to launch the world's first unmanned long distance freight train.
