A team of computer security researchers from Pen Test Partners took part in the DEF CON event, during which they demonstrated that even a simple thermostat equipped with a small data storage and SD card slot can not boast of absolute protection against intruders. The code written by the guys works on the same principle as the infamous banners-blockers, installed on the desktop of personal computers and extorting money, in exchange promising to return the user control over the operating system.
During the demonstration, the banner blocked access to the functionality of the device, showing offensive inscription and extorting 1 bitokoy from viewers. The burglars exerted additional pressure on those present, raising and lowering the temperature of the thermostat.
Not without nuances. The team specifically chose a certain model of the thermostat, but to make it a hack, hackers still had to get physical access to it. The malicious program was downloaded through the memory card slot, which the thermostat is equipped to enable users to load new boring wallpapers into the device screen.
The guys from Ten Tes Partners did not name the model and manufacturer of the hacked thermostat. Nevertheless, while it is not necessary to worry about a possible epidemic of heaters, weather stations and other multivaracters, unless you have a habit of letting suspect people into your house, rubbing the thermostats with sinister memory cards in their hands.
