Microsoft recently announced the end of Skype support for home TVs. It will happen in June 2016. After that, Microsoft does not plan to release further updates of this software product. Note that almost any Smart TV owner could (and can) install the Skype program on the TV and communicate with his friends and relatives (if there is a TV connection to the Network, of course). Many owners of "smart TVs" around the world do so.
Despite the fact that such news from Microsoft can be a big surprise for someone, the Redmond company hurried to explain the decision, pointing out that the presence of Skype on the TV does not make any sense, since most users have already installed the program on their mobile phones , home computers, tablets and other mobile devices.
"Since 2010, Skype offers amazing opportunities for communication, allowing you to communicate with your family via Smart TV from some manufacturers. However, after a few years, users changed the way they interacted with Skype, mostly switching to using the program on their mobile devices, including those that they only use at home, "says Microsoft.
"We want our users to get only the best experience from using the program on the platforms they use most often, so we decided to focus our efforts on these platforms, but at the same time keep the key functionality of Skype for TVs as long as possible ".
Even if Skype support for Smart TV stops in June, this does not necessarily mean that users will no longer be able to use this program on this platform. The software giant says that everything will depend on the manufacturers of our TV sets. Perhaps some will want to abandon Skype at once, while others will leave the program available for a while.
In addition, one thing is clear: if your TV already has Skype installed, the TV manufacturer will not be able to remove it. You will still be able to communicate with the outside world through this program, but will no longer receive new updates. Sooner or later, however, many still refuse to Skype for TVs because of security concerns.
