The British company ARM, known for its production of processors, recently announced plans to create an operating system designed for Internet of Things devices.
The operating system, dubbed mbed OS, is designed to solve the problem of fragmentation of devices from different manufacturers that produce products for the Internet of things. ARM plans to integrate all these devices with a single operating system, making it simple, secure and free for manufacturers.
“Big companies spend years designing a product, and we want to reduce this time to several months. Producers will be able to focus their attention on the device itself, and not on its software implementation, ”says the vice president of the ARM science department.
According to the developers, the mbed OS operating system will support several communication protocols, such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G networks and even LTE. In addition, ARM also plans to release the server version of the mbed OS to collect all information from smart devices in one place. In this case, the system will occupy only 256 kilobytes of memory, compared with gigabytes occupied by operating systems in smartphones.
But, as the resource spectrum.ieee.org reports, not all electronics manufacturers are happy to accept the appearance of the mbed OS. After all, GE already uses the Predix system in its products, Nest Labs uses a special version of Linux, and Samsung is promoting its Tizen system.
However, ARM plans to focus on smaller electronics manufacturers that are just entering the IoT market. It is reported that ARM has already signed several contracts, and the first devices with the mbed OS operating system will appear in 2015.
