Anyone who worked with a computer, sooner or later faced a situation where outdated software refuses to work on a new machine. The Agency of Advanced Defense Research Projects DARPA plans to solve this incompatibility problem by creating software systems that will not require the installation of new updates for more than a hundred years. The US Department of Defense, which is responsible for developing new technologies, announced the start of a four-year study in which leading programmers and scientists will try to figure out which algorithms are needed to create "the ideal software that can independently adapt to hardware changes within the system." DARPA calls this project “Creating Resource Adaptive Software Systems” or BRASS (Building Resource Adaptive Software Systems) and understands that its implementation is a very difficult task. In fact, the agency plans to create programs from scratch that will have much longer relevance and are not particularly demanding of their service.

“The goal of the program for creating resource adaptive software systems (BRASS) is to implement a project to develop and create long-lived, complex software systems that are resistant to changes in both physical and logical resources within their ecosystems,” says the description of this research program.

The agency has already started accepting proposals regarding any part of the implementation of this project. The most promising idea will form the basis of the project and acquire financing for further development.

If we consider this project as a whole, then DARPA wants to create military computers and machines that do not need to be stopped to carry out their software updates. In perspective, this should not only increase the efficiency of such machines, but also reduce the cost of their maintenance.
