Internet Explorer is still the most popular browser.

The battle for the world's most popular web browsers continues, and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer not only still maintains the top position in the list, but also, as statistics show in the last month of 2014, has increased its market share.

The data provided by analyst firm Net Applications for December 2014 shows that Internet Explorer currently occupies a leading position in popularity among browsers with a market share of 59.11 percent. Behind it is the Chrome browser from Google. It accounts for 22.65 percent. In third place with 11.91 percent is the Mozilla Firefox browser.

Despite the fact that for some such figures may seem quite surprising, especially considering such a huge gap from the nearest competitor in the face of Google Chrome, analysts say that Microsoft’s browser showed excellent results throughout 2014 and its performance was hardly going below 58 percent. This happened only twice - in March and April last year, when the browser share fell to 57.96 percent and 57.88 percent, respectively.

If you look at the big picture, the most popular browser on desktop computers with a share of 21.79 percent is Internet Explorer 11, followed by an older version of Internet Explorer 8 - it accounts for 19.28 percent.

The version of Chrome 39 with a market share of 12.79 percent is next. Internet Explorer is again behind Google’s browser (version 9 this time). It takes 9.29 percent. Next comes Firefox 34 with 6.18 percent.

Analysts say that only Internet Explorer (different versions) occupy six different positions in the lists of the most popular browsers, so it is not surprising that the overall results speak in favor of the browser from Microsoft.

At the moment, the Internet is vividly discussing the rumors that Microsoft is going to introduce a completely new browser in the new Windows 10 operating system, which in the end will have to completely replace Internet Explorer. Sources indicate that the new browser from the Redmond company is called Spartan. Along with Internet Explorer, it will be present in the new Windows 10 OS, but after some time, IE may disappear completely from the desktop OS.
