LG will release a smart watch based on webOS

LG will use webOS as an alternative to Android. The operating system will appear in the new line of smart watches, which is scheduled to start next year.

We are trying to create an ecosystem around things that we can control even more, - The Wall Street Journal newspaper quotes the words of a person familiar with the plans of LG.

LG has already released several smart watches based on Google software. One of the latest models - G Watch R - is running Android Wear.

Another WSJ source announced LG’s plans to launch another smart watch at the beginning of the year, capable of making calls without connecting to a smartphone. However, he did not specify which operating system will form the basis for them.

LG bought the webOS operating system from Hewlett-Packard in 2013. Then many industry participants took this news with surprise, because the platform, which was originally supposed to compete with Android and iOS on smartphones, suffered a complete fiasco.

Since the transaction, LG has adapted WebOS to various products, including televisions, and now, according to a source, is considering the possibility of its use in the Internet connected home appliances.

LG's first webOS-driven TV was released in 2014. In the future, on the basis of this platform, all TVs of the brand with Internet access will work.

LG management noted that this step has already yielded positive results. So, as of June 2014, the company has put on the market more than 1.1 million webOS-driven televisions. For comparison: the previous owner of WebOS sold only 20 thousand mobile devices based on this platform. Today, LG is the second largest TV vendor in the world after Samsung.

As for smartphones, LG, like many other manufacturers, including Samsung, relies heavily on Android. At the same time, Korean technology companies are developing their own platforms. In this way, they hope to get out of the influence of Google. At a consumer electronics trade show this week in Las Vegas, Samsung said it would expand the presence of Tizen’s proprietary operating system on its televisions.

The source also noted that in the near future, Android will continue to dominate on LG mobile devices - he was skeptical about the possibility of returning WebOS to smartphones:

The problem is not technology. There is a predominant system and people are used to it. It's hard to change that.

According to research firm Strategy Analytics, Android and iOS account for more than 95 percent of the smartphone market. In this case, Gartner predict growth in sales of smartphones based on young operating systems in the new year.
