Microsoft has come up with a way to scan 3D objects using a smartphone

Previously, if you needed to scan something three-dimensional, you needed a special scanner - quite expensive, it is worth saying. Nevertheless, Microsoft, together with Oxford University, came up with the best way to do this. Their MobileFusion project will allow you to create three-dimensional models using only the application on your smartphone.

The program scans objects, frame-by-frame comparing the images received by the camera and creating a stereo depth map - you only need to go around the desired object around with the phone in hand. This is somewhat similar to Kinect Fusion, but you are not tied to a computer or an uncomfortable peripheral device.

The results of such a scan are not so detailed that you can confuse them with real objects, but their quality is enough for 3D printing, augmented reality or any other purpose where high scanning speed is important. For example, you can create a model of a statue from a museum to later show it to a friend, or to decorate a page with your product on eBay with its three-dimensional model. At the moment, MobileFusion is still unavailable for regular users, but Microsoft promises to release applications for Android, iOS and Windows in the near future.
