Software updates for all Tesla Model S cars put an end to driver concerns about driving distances. The update makes it impossible to discharge the battery of the machine, if not intentionally contribute to this. The update also brought several new features related to autonomous driving.
The software, announced by the head of Tesla Elon Musk, does not add to cars efficiency, as previously assumed, but takes into account such factors as wind speed, terrain and driving style, so that the driver never moves away from Supercharger charging stations.
Even if the driver does not adhere to the cornering recommendations, the on-board computer will analyze the route based on the location of the charging stations, warning the driver when he moves away from the Supercharger. The system may also ignore busy charging stations, replacing them with those that are released before the car arrives.
Electric cars will be updated until the end of March
The software is currently in beta testing. It is planned that owners of Model S will get access to it until the end of March. Musk said the company intends to release updates every 3-4 months.
It is reported that the update will be distributed over the air to all Model S cars via a 3G connection.
In principle, it is impossible to exhaust the power reserve. Unless you do it on purpose, said Elon Musk.
According to Tesla, 90 percent of the US population is within 175 miles (280 km) of Supercharger gas stations, which in less than an hour fill the Model S battery by 80 percent. On one charge, this model is able to overcome a distance of 200 to 250 miles (320-400 km).
Now, when connected to the Supercharger network, the Tesla car will notify its owner of a sufficient battery charge to reach the next station within its route. This should help reduce the queues at gas stations. When the car will run out of charge, the onboard system will offer the driver to stop at the nearest Supercharger, without straying from the route.
Musk believes that 250-350 miles (400-560 km) - this is the optimal range of power, if we take into account the cost of an electric car. According to him, the company may offer a battery of 400-500 miles (640-800 km), but it will differ significantly in price and charging time.
Autonomous driving
In addition to the increased power reserve, autonomous driving features are also included in the update number 6.2. Model SD cars with already installed equipment for autonomous driving update will bring the functions of automatic emergency braking and control of "dead zones".
The collision avoidance system (Collision Avoidance Assist) automatically applies braking to avoid being hit if the car feels the inevitability of a frontal collision. When you press the gas pedal, the brake pedal, or when you turn the steering wheel sharply, the Automatic Emergency Braking system stops braking.
Another feature is the “Blind Spot Warning” monitoring system, which notifies the driver of being in a “dead zone” (invisible or inaccessible zone for rear-view mirrors) of another vehicle moving at a speed of 32 to 136 km / h. In the event of a collision hazard, the system signals the driver with sound, light indication and steering wheel vibration.
Version 6.2 also provides for the Valet mode, which reduces engine power and limits access to certain vehicle settings and personal driver data. It will be useful when you have to ask the serving staff of a hotel or restaurant to park your car. At the touch of a button, a driver can limit speed, close the glove box, and hide information about himself and his trips.
In addition, the update raises the bar on the maximum speed of the Model S P85 D from 209 to 250 km / h - this figure is typical for many traditional cars with an electronic speed limiter.
In conclusion, Elon Musk noted that the next software update, which will be released under number 7.0, will provide a new user interface and will reveal the advantages of the autonomous driving system, which some Tesla cars are already equipped with. This is an automatic steering and autonomous driving on the San Francisco-Seattle route without a driver.
Well, the new electric SUV Tesla Model X, which will compete with the Range Rover Evoque, will go on sale this summer. According to Mask, now the car looks much better than before.
