Last night, Microsoft shared with the public new details about the upcoming Windows 10 operating system and, among other things, told reporters gathered in a conference room about one of its main features - DirectX 12, a set of software APIs for working in Microsoft Windows. As it turned out, DirectX 12 will not support work with older versions of the operating system (Windows 7, Windows 8) and will require the owner of the computer to have a new graphics card with appropriate support.
Information that Microsoft is developing a new Windows 10 operating system was confirmed last year, but only yesterday the company decided to talk about some of the main features of the new OS, primarily designed to interest gamers around the world. We are talking about the possibility of streaming from the Xbox One to PC and other devices based on Windows 10, as well as closer integration of the new OS with the Xbox ecosystem. One such example would be the game Fable Legends, which will be released not only on the Xbox One game console, but also on personal computers, providing the opportunity to play between the owners of consoles and PC over the network.
Special mention deserves the information about the new DirectX 12 - the last iteration of the API, which is now used in most modern PC games. In addition to the fact that the new DirectX will significantly improve the ultimate performance of the computer, DirectX 12 is designed to be a real revelation for both the PC platform and the Xbox One platform.
The network has information that DirectX 12 will become the exclusive function of the Windows 10 operating system and support for the new API in such operating systems as Windows 7 and Windows 8 is not planned. However, if we consider that for owners of licensed copies of these operating systems, Microsoft will provide an opportunity to upgrade to Windows 10 completely free of charge for a year, then the problem seems not so big.
However, the problem is still present. And it lies in the fact that those wishing to take advantage of all the charms of DirectX 12 will have to update their graphics cards by purchasing new ones with appropriate support. It is reported that some of the graphics solutions currently on the market will still receive support for some DirectX 12 features, but unfortunately we don’t have more detailed information on this subject.
We will definitely be able to learn more about DirectX 12 and other new useful features for working in the Windows 10 environment as part of the upcoming GDC 2015 game developer conference, which will be held in early March. Microsoft has already reserved its application to participate in it.
