The Disney Research department has created a new augmented reality application. It allows you to actually "revive" the characters of the coloring books, making them voluminous. In this case, all this happens in real time, that is, at the moment when the very process of coloring this character takes place directly.
The application monitors and captures the image of the book in real time thanks to the camera of the mobile device, and then creates its three-dimensional layout on any surface. In the example shown in the video, the elephant is coloring. On the tablet screen, this elephant acquires a three-dimensional form, which is also synchronously colored with the image in the book.
The application is still being finalized, so it’s not worth waiting for it to appear in the public domain anytime soon. In addition, as indicated by Gizmodo, it will probably work only with coloring books that can be purchased at the Disney Store. Nevertheless, we have a great example of technology that allows us to “revive” the favorite heroes of children and thus attract their attention. What in today's reality is becoming increasingly difficult.
