Windows 10 will be free even for pirates

We have already reported that the release of the Windows 10 operating system will take place this summer and for owners of licensed copies of the Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems, the update to the new version will be free. However, Microsoft decided on a truly generous offer that should definitely appeal to users of illegal copies of Redmond company's operating systems.

"We are going to upgrade to Windows 10 all suitable computers for this," Terry Myerson, head of Microsoft’s Windows division, told Reuters in an interview.

This step means that thousands, and possibly millions of machines around the world will get a free licensed copy of Windwos 10 even if the license for previous versions of operating systems was obtained in a not entirely fair way. And although the interview was primarily about China (it is not yet known whether the proposal will extend to other regions), the phrase Myers "all suitable computers" may indirectly hint that other countries can expect such a generous gesture of the company. Portal The Verge decided to contact the representatives of Microsoft and find out the details.

Microsoft and piracy are linked for many years of confrontation. Windows XP was the first operating system of the company, which began to offer the use of license activation keys during installation. However, this method of protection was quickly "defeated" by pirates, who began to use special corporate keys, with which the Internet was filled in 2001. More advanced software activation methods were also used in subsequent versions of Microsoft operating systems, but the pirates bypassed them very quickly each time.

Numerous studies show that in many cases of using pirated copies of Windows, the owners of the machines are not even aware of installing them on computers of an unlicensed copy of the OS. To solve this problem, Microsoft tried numerous methods aimed at stimulating and motivating the use of licensed copies, however, the previous bad experience of using Windows, coupled with the price issue in some regions, became the main reasons for the reluctance of people to use licenses.

Piracy in the Windows environment is a really large-scale problem, so a step towards being completely free in the case of Microsoft really looks amazing and at the same time makes sense. Back in 2011, the former CEO of the company, Steve Ballmer, shared that for every ten Windows users in China, only one actually paid for a licensed copy. The problem of piracy is so large-scale that not only other major representatives of the software business, but also the president of the United States himself spoke about the importance of finding its solution. The company continues to point out that piracy causes enormous damage to the company's financial status throughout the world, but the most illegal use of Windows copies is found in Brazil, Russia, India and China.
