BusinessWeek reports that at least 95 percent of all ATMs around the world are currently still running under the Windows XP operating system, which means that all of them will become more vulnerable to hackers after Microsoft stops supporting this OS. and, accordingly, the release of various patches and patches designed to improve the security of devices operating on the basis of this platform.
The current assessment of experts is very real, and they believe that only 15 percent of this number of ATMs around the world by April 8, 2014 will switch to Windows 7.
“ATMs are not ready by now, but this situation is quite understandable. Their update is much slower than the update of personal computers, ”says Aravinda Coral, executive director of the ATM software company KAL.
The owners of these machines are aware of the seriousness of the risk of their Windows XP-based systems and many of them are already planning to switch to another operating system, however, judging by the forecasts, this migration is unlikely to be completed before the OS support expires.
JPMorgan, a financial conglomerate, for example, decided to buy from Microsoft an additional support service for its Windows XP-based systems in order to gain time and transfer its ATMs to a more secure platform (Windows 7), but this transition will only begin in July of this year. The problem is that 3,000 out of 19,000 JPMorgan ATMs require prior improvement of their hardware before proceeding.
However, the main problem, as always, is the question of the cost of this transition. BusinessWeek writes that the cost of switching from Windows XP to a more modern platform will cost companies from one hundred to several thousand dollars only for one updated machine, especially if in this case an update of hardware is required.
Fortunately for everyone, Microsoft revised its plans a bit and decided to extend support for Windows XP for some time. And it expires on July 15, 2015. After this date, users will work with Windows XP at their sole risk and peril.
