Android goes on the road: Google has created an Open Automobile Alliance

Audi

Google announced the creation of the Open Automotive Alliance (Open Automotive Alliance) with car makers Audi, GM, Honda, Hyundai and developer of Nvidia processors. In other words, the company integrates the Android operating system into cars. This confirms the recent rumors about the cooperation of Google and Audi in the development of automotive electronics based on Android.

If everything goes according to plan, the first cars with the Android operating system on board will go on sale at the end of 2014. In the future, the group plans to attract even more automakers and technology companies to this initiative. The press release of the Open Automotive Alliance states that now all attention is focused on the development of new functionality for Android, which will allow developers to easily customize their applications for use in cars. The Alliance collaborates with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to ensure the safety of using the system in cars.

It seems that Google has high hopes for the introduction of Android in cars. That's what Patrick Brady, head of the Android Engineering division, wrote on his blog:

It would be great to use your favorite applications and music using the built-in controls and the on-board display of the car. Together with OAA partners, we are developing new forms of integration with Android devices and Android adaptation for use in cars to improve safety and driving comfort.

It is worth noting that Google is not the only technology company, swinging on cars. Earlier, Apple announced plans to integrate its iOS operating system into BMW, Mercedes, GM, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, Chrysler and Honda cars. Microsoft, in turn, works closely with Ford.

It seems that automakers will not stop their choice on someone one. Honda has already supported the initiative of Apple, and Chevrolet has added support for the high-speed LTE network and the AppShop application store to the 2015 model range, which is a bit like the iOS App Store and Google Play.
