Before the start of one of the latest court proceedings between Apple and Samsung, a valuable employee of the apple company told the details of the development of the first iPhone smartphone. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Apple chief engineer Greg Christie told about an ultimatum that Steve Jobs had once put in front of his team.
According to Christie, in February 2005, Apple’s legend Steve Jobs gave him and the developers under his command an incredible, as it seemed, task: to come up with some great ideas for the iPhone within two weeks. Otherwise, the software development project should have been transferred to another group of developers.
The Christie team offered several features that became the “chips” of the first iPhone. So Jobs was introduced to the function "Slide to Unlock" to unlock the touchscreen and built-in music player. Such things hardly pop up in memory, especially when we are surrounded by touch screens with many user interfaces everywhere.
The engineer said that very few people worked on the iPhone software, but this did not prevent them from achieving success. Jobs liked the result.
Another surprise was the small device that the Christie team used to create the first version of the iOS operating system - a plastic touch screen with the code name "Wallaby" connected to an outdated Mac G3 computer that simulated the first-generation iPhone processor. The photo below shows the very room in which the first iPhone was created. To prevent information leakage, there were no windows in the room.
It is worth noting that Christie, who still works at Apple, has never before revealed secrets. Apparently, the company’s management allowed him to do this in order to show everyone how innovative the first iPhone was. This was done just before the next trial with Samsung, which is accused of copying Apple's ideas.
In 2012, the court ruled that Samsung "intentionally" violated , for which he obliged the South Korean company to pay huge compensation. But in the course of endless trials, Apple could not achieve a ban on the sale of Samsung devices in the US.
