The American company Vicarious on the page of its blog announced the creation of a new algorithm of artificial intelligence, and also reported that with the help of this algorithm, it is possible to bypass the anti-spam protection of some sites.
We are talking about protection, which is called CAPTCHA and is used on many sites to restrict access to automated computer programs, computer bots that are engaged in spamming. CAPTCHA is a system that shows the user an image with the text written in bad handwriting and checks the correctness of the input of these words by the user.
Earlier there were similar developments, but the old systems selected words using optical character recognition or used the elementary “brute force” selection method. But the new algorithm from Vicarious works on the basis of a recursive cortical network (Recursive Cortical Network), developed by the company itself. It is a visual perception system that attempts to process incoming visual information in the way that the human brain does. The details of the algorithm have not been disclosed. Such an algorithm allows correct captcha recognition in 90% of cases. The system can even cope with complex tasks on the Captcha.com, Google, Yahoo and Paypal sites. Representatives of the company say that even for difficult tasks, the algorithm does not use large computational resources and can cope in a short period of time.
But the new algorithm has some drawbacks. At this stage of development, he can only recognize Latin characters, so that the Cyrillic CAPTCHA still remains reliable protection. Also, captcha written on a checkerboard background cannot be cracked.
Although the invention of Vicarious almost put an end to the widespread protection system on the Internet, the creator of captcha Louis von An says that this algorithm did not completely destroy protection. Over time, ways to create a captcha to improve, and the work of the company Vicarious will come to naught.
