At a hackfest in San Francisco, Google introduced a set of software development tools for Glass, inviting developers to take part in building applications for their wearable devices.
The Glass Development Kit (GDK) provides developers with previously inaccessible features of Google Glass. From now on, experts can create applications that work offline, in real time, and also use the built-in accelerometer and GPS.
Timothy Jordan of Google, responsible for communication with developers, speaking to an audience of about a hundred people, said that, despite the company's deliberate difficulties in installing applications for Glass, more than 83 percent of device owners were able to install at least one application.
GDK gives you the ability to create custom services in a familiar manner, he said.
To date, developers have used the Mirror API component to write applications. GDK, in turn, offers much more programming possibilities: access to coordinate determination functions, camera controls, and the addition of voice commands and gestures.
Some participants in the event who had previously gained access to the GDK presented demos of their applications to the participants. One of the most impressive, as written by CNET, turned out to be an application called Word Lens, which serves as a translator. It replaces typed foreign words with others from the user-selected language.
Word Lens is not perfect. According to the developers, the current version of the program does not recognize the fine print, for example, the menu text in restaurants. However, it clearly demonstrates the potential usefulness of Google Glass.
Among the remaining applications shown, AllTheCooks is worth mentioning for those who like to cook and eat deliciously, the Strava trackers for sports, the interactive puzzle game Spellista and the GolfSight app for golfers.
