A new feature has been added to the Instagram service that allows you to send personal photos and videos to a narrow circle of people. The service called Instagram Direct was presented personally by Kevin Sistrom, the founder and head of Instagram.
According to Systrom, the new feature is intended for private discussion of a specific photo or video. There are restrictions on sending personal content - the number of simultaneous recipients should not exceed 15. Moreover, the message can be sent only to users who subscribe to each other’s accounts. Until now, all subscribers of the sender account could see the message in Instagram.
The meaning of Instagram Direct is to share moments that are significant only for a small group of people, for example, friends, relatives or fellow students, the New York Times newspaper writes.
The success of instant messaging services such as Snapchat and WhatsApp contributed to the release of Instagram Direct, accessible to users of mobile devices based on iOS and Android. It is also worth noting that earlier this week, the most popular microblogging service Twitter introduced its photo-sharing function in personal messages.
According to analysts from Forrester Research, users spend a phenomenal amount of time in applications.
Facebook, which bought Instagram for $ 1 billion in 2012, has been trying to launch a separate instant messaging service for many years, but without success. Neither Facebook Messenger, nor the Facebook Home platform with the Chat Heads feature was able to gain popularity among users of mobile devices. The company even attempted to buy Snapchat, but he rejected its offer.
Unlike Facebook Messenger, Instagram has no problem attracting new users. A recent company statement says it has 150 million users and billions of downloaded photos. In an effort to capitalize on this, Instagram has started selling advertising.
