New Google app converts sign language to speech

Google Nexus

The new application, which is currently in development, will teach people to understand sign language in real time. Students at the Swedish School of Communication Berg in Stockholm are working with Google to create a program for translating the language of the deaf-mute into ordinary speech, which even elephants can distinguish. The efforts of the children were awarded the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

The application, which is being developed by the Swedes, is called Google Gesture. The program works in a pair with a special bandage, worn on the wrist. The device analyzes muscle movements performed by the sign language user. This process is known as electromyography. Measurements of the bioelectric potentials of skeletal muscles are transmitted to the application, which in turn translates them into the corresponding speech sounds, writes the online magazine Mashable.

The vast majority of people do not understand sign language. And this means that many interesting conversations can never take place, - the video message to the Google Gesture application says.

The new application should fix this problem by instantly translating gestures to speech. This will remove the language barrier that interferes with communication with deaf and dumb and hard of hearing people.

Unfortunately, the release date of the application was not announced.

Today, the deaf and hearing impaired communicate in sign language via video link.
