When the Finnish company Nokia announced a couple of years ago that it was going to stop supporting its own Symbian mobile operating system and switch to Microsoft’s support for the Windows Phone mobile platform, many people were at a loss as Windows Phone was hard to call (and now it’sn’t very easy) one of the most profitable mobile platforms. However, Nokia’s CEO Steven Elop recently revealed in an interview with The Hindu newspaper the secret of why the company decided to invest in Windows Phone.
According to Elop, this was done with one goal: to support promising development and give it the right push, momentum.
“What we like about Windows Phone is that this operating system is always heard - it has become a trend. Yes, you may be right that it does not bring profit, but our decision was made fully consciously. When you start something new, you have to invest a lot in this new project, invest huge sums of money. However, if you look at the situation that was, say, five years ago ... you will definitely notice progress towards sales of this mobile platform. For this reason, Microsoft continues to do what it does and considers it necessary. How can you abandon a project that has growth prospects? We consciously decided that the more money we invest in development, the stronger the impulse of this development will be. We are glad that we made just such a decision and do not regret anything. ”
For a specified period of time, the Windows Phone platform does show growth, but it still remains far behind such giants as Android and iOS. Will Nokia end up with a profit from its “adventure”? Are the funds invested in the platform justified? Now Nokia occupies 90 percent of the mobile device market based on the Windows Phone operating system, but these figures do not bring any joy to the company itself, because they are not talking about the popularity of the platform as a whole, but only that this OS is for no one but Microsoft and Nokia is no longer interesting.
