Most people edit photos in Photoshop and other graphic editors, but their basic settings are limited to two dimensions: rotate, increase or decrease, resize photos, etc.
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have developed software that turns 2D objects in a photo into 3D objects. Now with its help objects in the photo can be rotated around any axis and show angles and sides that were not visible in the original image. This result was achieved thanks to a simple comparison of 2D-objects shown in the picture with 3D models that are freely available on the Internet.
The first step the user selects an object that wants to convert, and searches on the Internet for a similar 3D model, reports Engadget. Then the program studies the geometry of the existing objects in the photo, and then changes the model in such a way, as a result of which the image is very similar to the original. Not only does the size and shape of the model change, but its color, surface texture and lighting also change. Also, such a program can be used not only for photographs, but also for paintings and animation.
“In the real world we can lift objects, rotate them around us. We have created an environment that gives you the same opportunities when editing photos, ”said graduate student, lead author of the study Natasha Kholheyd.
In the video, which is located below, you can see the change of some objects.
