Canonical announced this week via a bug report website Launchpad that it stopped developing the Ubuntu project for Android. The main idea of this project was the ability of the owners of Android-smartphones to use the Ubuntu operating system when connecting an external monitor, keyboard and mouse to the device.
Given the innovativeness and uniqueness of this project, it becomes sad to realize that the developer ultimately decided to close it. In a statement on the site Launchpad reported:
“The website describes Ubuntu for Android as one of the“ must have chips ”for Android smartphones released since the end of 2012. Ubuntu for Android is no longer in development, so the page with a description of the project and all data relating to it will be deleted soon. ”
Canonical also decided to confirm the closure information of Ubuntu for Andoird, stating the following:
“We were very pleased with the reaction to the new version of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS for desktop solutions and the early images of the Ubuntu operating system for phones. We believe that this development has shown the willingness and desire of the market for Ubuntu devices, and Ubuntu for Android (U4A) would be an excellent solution to meet these needs. "
“We still believe that U4A is a great concept product and customers would accept it well. However, the development of Ubuntu for the U4A project is complete. For further development, we need partnership agreements that would provide modifications by Android. ”
“At the moment, there are no discussions with partners about these issues, but we are still fully open to this type of cooperation. Now the company is fully focused on developing Ubuntu for smartphones and is doing no work in promoting the Ubuntu project for Android. However, if there are parties interested in this project, we will always be happy to continue working on the Ubuntu project for Android. ”
