Skype is working on a technology that would be very impressive if users had the technical ability to take advantage of its results. We are talking about three-dimensional video calls. This became known from an interview given by Microsoft Vice President Mark Gillett to BBC journalists. The interview was dedicated to the ten-year anniversary of the beloved by many Skype. Earlier it became known that the popular program for video calls and voice communication will be included in the next operating system of the software giant Windows 8.1.
Mark Gillett told reporters that Skype labs are working on three-dimensional communication in both directions. That is, both above the capture of a 3D image and its subsequent reproduction. When mass monitors and televisions are able to play 3D video, the new technology will be able to spread. But not before. For theory to become a practice, industry will have to work hard. The fact is that for shooting a three-dimensional image you will need not one camera, but several. Moreover, they will need to be placed at certain angles so that the image is correct.
Gillett told the BBC that the implementation of such a promising project would require a hardware ecosystem, after the appearance of which it would make sense to run the appropriate software, which Skype specialists are working on. But there is a psychological side of the issue. 3D video communication is less attractive to consumers than other scopes of three-dimensional video. And, therefore, it will take considerable time to awaken the interest of users.
3D movies and television programs are not taken seriously by many experts. In particular, the BBC froze its 3DTV technology project. The reason for this was weak demand and the need for special glasses. These difficulties do not inspire consumers to show interest in innovation.
Sony seems to have stopped working on a 3D display for the PlayStation game console, despite the fact that games are the most promising area for using three-dimensional images. However, the Japanese company did not make any official statements on this matter.
In addition to long-term plans, Skype has some developments that can pave the way for users in the near future. We are talking about video calls with a resolution of 1080p, which can be carried out using the upcoming Xbox One game consoles. However, video calls will be available only to those game console users who subscribe. A three-dimensional video calls today is a pure theory, which in practice can not be claimed by modern users.
