Microsoft is going to bring its operating system to perfection. Talk about cross-platform Windows has been going on for a long time, but the question still remains open. The company said it intends to create a single platform for a variety of devices, starting with smartphones and ending with servers. Users will get a unified interface, and programmers are a handy development tool, writes Computerworld magazine on information technology.
We really need a single interface for all of our devices. We want to offer developers a single set of APIs, ”said Terry Myerson, executive vice president of the newly created Operating Systems Engineering Group, during a meeting with financial analysts.
Three months ago, during the reorganization process, Microsoft formed an engineering group for operating system issues. Then the head of the company, Steve Ballmer, announced that the new department will monitor all Microsoft operating systems, that is, for consoles, mobile devices, desktop computers, cloud services and internal enterprise management systems.
Despite the technical difficulties, the idea of creating a universal operating system seems attractive. However, experts do not believe in the possibility of implementing this idea, pointing to the success of the strategy, which is followed by Apple and Google. Companies have two operating systems in their portfolio. Apple, for example, uses iOS in mobile devices, and Mac OS in workstations and laptops. Google’s Android platform is well-established on smartphones and tablets, and Chrome OS is designed for laptops and PCs.
Microsoft is already taking concrete steps in this direction. The company began accepting preorders for the Windows 8.1 package, which is designed to facilitate the perception of the tiled interface that came with the G8.
