The popularity of unlicensed software continues to grow

Нелицензионный софт

Despite all the efforts of intellectual property defenders, the popularity of unlicensed software continues to grow. This was reported by analytical company IDC, which made public the results of a study of the situation with the use of pirated software in the world.

The research was ordered by Microsoft. At her request, IDC found out how often users install unlicensed software on personal and corporate computers. It turned out that since 2006 the total number of cases of installing unlicensed programs in the world has tripled and today about 33% of software is used without a license.

Interestingly, the reluctance to pay for licenses leads to multi-million dollar spending on computer repairs and the fight against viruses. According to statistics, unlicensed computer programs in 45% of cases lead to a slowdown in its operation, in 34% of cases the software doesn’t want to work at all, in 30% of cases the browser starts to open pop-up windows at random, in 17% of cases everything ends with reformatting the hard disk 23% of users use unlicensed software without problems. To restore information and solve problems caused by viruses and trojans from pirated software, users spend about 22 billion dollars a year, companies are even more - only direct damage is estimated at 114 billion dollars. Often, the damage is caused by company employees who install programs on corporate computers on their own.

The only positive change is that the Network has become cleaner. In 2006, 25% of websites were involved in the spread of malware, in 2013 it was only 14%. Modern browsers are much faster in detecting the malicious nature of sites, and the search engines do not sit idly by detecting and blocking the sources of software that are infected with viruses and trojans.
