Webcams taught to imitate eye contact

Skype videophone conferencing applications are great for communicating with friends and colleagues from a distance. But despite all the advantages, video calls in their current form have one major drawback - the lack of eye contact.

While using video conferencing, you seek to direct your gaze to the interlocutor. Unfortunately, in most cases, the webcam is located above the level of the user's eyes, which somewhat distorts the actual picture. On the monitor, it looks like your interlocutor looks down at you while you are talking, not directly in your eyes.

The new technology developed by the staff of the computer graphics laboratory ETH Zurich corrects this shortcoming. Special software recognizes and turns the faces of the interlocutors as if their eyes are looking directly into the center of the screen. The end result looks impressive.

Today this technology is available only for large companies. However, the software is also suitable for use with ordinary home webcams.

The current software version only works with webcams equipped with depth sensors. The problem is that most devices on the market today are not capable of perceiving depth. Manufacturers do not complete them with depth sensors, primarily because of the high cost of the latter. In this regard, engineers plan to adapt the technology for use on ordinary webcams.

Google meanwhile wants to force users to grimace in front of the smartphone screen.
