For the past 10 years, the Swedish company Tobii has been working on GAZE technology, which allows you to control a computer not only with a keyboard, mouse or touchpad, but also with eyes. At the last CES 2012 exhibition, the company showed a working prototype for Window 8. At the future CES 2013 (to be held from January 8 to 11), the company is going to show the first consumer device supporting GAZE functionality for absolutely any device running Windows 8.
A device called Tobii REX allows the Windows 8 user to use his eyes, together with a mouse or touchpad, to control scrolling, zooming in, navigating and choosing one or another action.
To do this, the REX device is attached to the bottom of the monitor and connected to the USB port of the computer. When combining the elementary motor functions of a person (clicking on a button) and tracking a human eye, the REX makes it much faster and more convenient to control the interface of the operating system. It does not replace the control of the mouse, keyboard or touchpad, but rather complements it. Just now you will not need to carry the mouse over the rug or finger on the touchpad - these actions will be performed by REX, which will monitor your eyes. All you have to do is click the mouse or keyboard when you select the desired item with your eyes.
The plans of the company Tobii - the release of only 5,000 such devices this year. The final price is not yet announced. However, the REX Developer Edition kit for developers who want to familiarize themselves with the device's functions, create applications that support GAZE technology, or adapt existing ones is already available on the market. It offers to buy for 995 dollars.
Tobii shows only the device version for developers and says that the consumer version of the device will look very different. Most likely it will be smaller and cheaper.
