This is the conclusion made by Bit9, an online security company. In the report, which is called “Pause Google Play: more than 100 thousand Android applications can harm your security,” analysts focused on more than 400 thousand different applications from the Google store.
Calculations showed that 26% (100.000) of all applications can be considered suspicious. True, analysts insist that this does not necessarily mean that these programs are viruses, and immediately notice that Google is doing an excellent job cleaning such (infected) programs. Just these applications, after their installation on the device, get more rights than the user expects. And if you take into account the fact that in the age of smartphones many people store their personal and corporate information in them, then the free access that these applications receive can ultimately cause a number of problems.
The study shows that 72% of Android applications requesting at least one permission to access information can be classified as very dangerous.
People from Bit9 also say that the question is not only in the access itself, but about the type of applications that request it:
“Agree that the request for access of some social application to electronic contacts looks less suspicious than a request for the same from any interactive wallpaper?”,
- commented on the situation of Harry Sverdlov in his blog.
The report says that companies are most at risk, 71% of which allow employees to bring and connect their own devices to the common network. In addition, 96% of all respondents admitted that employees are given access to corporate mail.
Among other things, it is noted that 84% of respondents are confident that iOS is much more secure than Android.
