In order to improve safety, vertical take-off and landing aircraft will operate under Linux . This decision was made by the leadership of the US Navy after last year’s malware infection of ground control systems. The installation of the Linux operating system on unmanned aerial vehicles will be handled by Raytheon, the main American contractor of the Department of Defense. The cost of the transaction is estimated at 28 million dollars.
It is reported that the US Navy has only one vertical landing and takeoff drone - this is the MQ-8B Fire Scout. This aircraft is able to autonomously take off and land on any aircraft carrier, and even on an unprepared landing area in close proximity to a person.
MQ-8B Fire Scout has already been used in operations to detect illicit drug shipments. In the future, the US Navy plans to increase the fleet to 168 UAVs.
